@zebodeko… wie is de creatieveling achter dit mooie instagramaccount?

Mijn naam is Birgitte De Paepe, maar iedereen noemt me Biche. Ik ben 52, en geboren in Belgie en 27 jaar geleden verhuisd voor m’n liefde naar Frankrijk. Nu wonend in een klein dorpje op het platteland van Zuid-Frankrijk op 20km van de kust ( Saint Tropez is op 50km ), met mijn twee jongste kinderen, Ayla 20 en Timo 16. De oudste, Tom van 22 heeft zijn eigen appartement.

Mijn 50 jaar oude huis dat ik 10 jaar geleden gekocht en volledig gerenoveerd heb is omgeven door een bos en staat vol met kringvondsten, mijn eigen ontworpen geweven wandkleden en tonnen planten.

Voor de kost leid ik een Belgisch restaurant met mijn broer in Hyeres ( Zuid-Frankrijk ), maar mijn doel is om mijn inkomen te verdienen met interieurontwerpen. Ik hou ervan om dingen te creëren en de natuur is mijn inspiratie.

Ik ben constant bezig met het veranderen en het opnieuw stylen van mijn woonhuis en daaromheen. Hetzelfde gebeurt namelijk in de tuin van een oppervlakte van ca. 800m² en samengesteld uit verschillende ruimtes: een chill patio voor de keuken, een zwembad met zonnebank, een balkon voor mijn slaapkamer en een schuurtje achterin.

De rest van de tuin achter het huis is wild, wat betekent dat het in zijn natuurlijke staat is achtergelaten met bomen, struiken, wilde bloemen en wijnstokken.

My name is Birgitte De Paepe but everybody calls me Biche, I’m 52 years old. I was born in Belgium and moved to France (for love ) 27 years ago. I live in a small village in rural south of France

at 20km from the coast ( Saint Tropez is at 50km), with my two youngest children, Ayla 20 and Timo 16. The oldest, Tom 22, has his own apartment.

 My 50 years old house I bought and completely renovated 10 years ago  is boarded by a forest and filled with thrift finds, my own designed woven wall hangings, and tons of plants.

For a living, I manage a Belgian restaurant with my brother in Hyeres, south of France, but my goal is to make a living with interior design.  I love to create things and nature is my inspiration.

I constantly change and move things around the house. The same happens in the garden which is approx. 800 m² and composed by different areas: a chill Patio in front of the kitchen,

a swimming pool with solarium in teak, a balcony in front of my bedroom and a little shed in the back.

The rest of the garden behind the house is wild, meaning it’s left in its natural state with trees, bushes, wild flowers and vines.

Hoe kwam je tuinontwerp tot stand?

Het begon allemaal een lange tijd geleden, in de buik van mijn moeder. Ze is een bloemist, ik ben geboren in onze bloemenwinkel in Antwerpen, België. Als kunstenaar zelf gaf ze me de honger om te creëren. Ik ontdek de hele wereld door te tekenen, schilderen en mozaïek. Creatief zijn is altijd een noodzaak geweest. En toen, ongeveer twee jaar geleden, ontdekte ik de wereld van weven,

en het voelde als thuiskomen. Dat is toen ik mijn zebodeko instagram-account begon. Ik heb altijd genoten van het op verschillende manieren decoreren / ontwerpen van mijn huis / tuin, maar mijn weefsels waren de enige dingen die ik tot vorig jaar heb gepost.

Het begon met één kamer. Enkele leuke berichten en reacties en opeens zat mijn hoofd vol met ideeën die ik gewoon moest uitproberen.

Waar haal ik mijn ideeën vandaan? Door alles wat ik zie, maar vooral de natuur inspireert mij. Ik ga vaak naar kringloopwinkels waar een eenvoudig item het begin van een ontwerp kan zijn. Het kan ook een film zijn of een stuk hout op het strand,….

Hoe plan je je ontwerp? Ga je zitten en teken je het eerst of doe je het gewoon ..?

Het plan begint in mijn hoofd met één detail dat ik wil gebruiken, en daarom teken ik dat detail om het niet te vergeten en voeg ik meer details toe terwijl het idee in mijn hoofd rijpt.

Alles bij elkaar geeft het me een soort moodboard die ik omvorm tot een schets. Soms gaat dit proces zo snel dat ik het niet hoef te tekenen en begin ik uit het niets te stylen. Het voelt alsof een niet te stoppen creatieve drive de controle overneemt, en ik vind het geweldig!

How did your garden design come about?

Everything started a long long time ago, in the belly of my mum  she’s a florist, I was born in our flower shop in Antwerp, Belgium. Being an artist herself, she gave me the hunger to create.

I’ve been exploring the world of drawing, painting and mosaic my whole life, being creative has always been a necessity. And then, about two years ago I discovered the world of weaving,

and it felt like coming home. That’s when I started my zebodeko instagram account.

I’ve always loved decorating/designing my home/garden  in different ways, but my weavings were the only things I posted until last year.

It started with one room. Some nice messages and reactions and suddenly my head was full of ideas I just haaad to try out.

Where do I get my ideas? Everything I see but especially nature inspires me. I often go to thrift stores where a simple item can be the start of a design. It can also be a movie or a piece of wood on the beach, ….

How do you plan your design? Do you sit down and draw it first or do you just do it..? 

The plan starts in my head with one detail I want to use, and so I draw that detail not to forget it and add more details as the idea ripes in my head.

All together it gives me a kinda mood board which I transform into a sketch. Sometimes this process goes so fast I don’t have to draw it and I start styling out of the blue. It feels like an unstoppable creative drive is taking over control, and I love it!

Wat is je lievelingsplek in de tuin?

Mijn favoriete plekje is mijn schuurtje “Casita Bonita” aan boord van het wilde groene “links natuurlijke” wildernisgebied van mijn tuin.

Deze kleine loungeplek, waar ik graag in de vroege avonden met een cocktail zit als het nog te warm is op het dek dat volledig zuidelijk voor het huis ligt, is letterlijk mijn canvas.

Ik verander constant dingen zodat het mijn stemming weerspiegelt. Ik hou ervan om het decor aan te passen aan mijn dagelijkse spaarzame vondsten en creaties. Mijn serieuze zwak voor planten zorgde ervoor dat ik een ‘potplantentuin’ creëerde voor de schuur en ik installeerde ook mijn kleine plantenhoek in de buurt.

What is your favorite place in the garden?

My favorite spot is my she-shed “Casita Bonita” boarded by the wild green “left natural” wilderness area of my garden. 

This tiny lounge spot, where I love to sit with a cocktail in the early evenings when it’s still too warm on the deck located full south in front of the house, literally is my canvas.  

I constantly change things around so it reflects my mood. I love to adapt the decor to my daily thrift finds and creations. My serious weakness for plants made me create a “pot plant garden” in front of the shed and I also installed my little plant care corner close by.

Wat zou je iedereen aanraden die nog een buitenplek gaat maken?

Maak een junglesfeer met vaste planten en planten in potten, voeg natuurlijke kleuren en elementen toe. Zoals hout steen grassen, cactussen, pebble steentjes, riet.

Exotische planten of bomen? Zorg ervoor dat ze vorstvrij kunnen staan en of zorg voor een vorstvrije plaats binnen.

What would you recommend to anyone who is going to make an outdoor space?

(My best advice for making your garden into “an oases you love” would be to create different areas: green zone/patio/shed/balcony/terrace…  

Jungelize your space with planted and potted plants, bring natural elements and colors in your design, such as wood, stones, rattan, grasses, plants, cacti, shells, pebbles, reed … If you opt for exotic plants or trees, make sure they can stand frost and if not foresee some space to take them inside in winter. )

Wat staat er nog op je verlanglijstje in de tuin?

Gezien het teak houten terras achter het zwembad is ingestort ga ik het vervangen door een « mexican desert » rots massief met zand, kiezels, cacti en een western houten schutting met daartegen een waterval muur. So excited!!

Ook een greenhouse en een treecabin staan nog op m’n verlanglijstje, maar dan moet ik eerst de loto winnen haha.

What else is on your wish list in the garden?

Since the teak wooden terrace behind the pool has collapsed, I will replace it with a “Mexican desert” rock massif with sand, pebbles, cacti and a western wooden fence with a waterfall wall against it. So excited !!

Also a greenhouse and a treecabin are still on my wish list, but then I have to win the lottery first haha.

Insta, magazines, TV, een object in de kringwinkel, een stuk hout op’t strand, de tuin van een vriendin, een nieuwe plant, eigenlijk alles en niets specifieks

Where do you get your garden inspiration from?

Instagram, magazines, TV and an object in the thrift store, a piece of wood on the beach, a friend’s garden, a new plant, basically everything and nothing specific.

Je beste tuintip:

Volg je eigen smaak en smaak (geen trends) en creëer waar je van droomt.

Wees niet bang om kleuren te gebruiken of voor “meer is meer” te gaan in ruimtes waar je net langs komt. Wees dapper, wees gek, wees onconventioneel, creëer fantasie en luister naar je hart! Twijfel nooit aan jezelf!

Kun je het zelf doen?

Follow your own envies and taste (not trends), and create what you dream about. 

Don’t be afraid to use colors or to go for “more is more” in spaces where you’re just passing. 

Be brave, be crazy, be unconventional, create fantasy and listen to your hart!

Wat / waar is je droomhuis?

Mijn droomhuis zou een super natuurlijke cirkelvormige bamboe eco-constructie zijn of een klein huis.

Hoe ziet de rest van je huis eruit?

Als ik de stijl van mijn huis in drie woorden zou beschrijven, zou ik zeggen dat het een Boheemse jungle-sprookjesland is. Mijn huis is gebouwd in de jaren ’70. Ik kocht het in 2009 en renoveerde het volledig van vloer tot dak, met alleen de oude deuren. De garage werd de woonkamer, de voormalige keuken en de woonkamer werden slaapkamers en in een aanbouw werd een nieuwe keuken toegevoegd. Ik heb ook een zwembad met een terras rondom de bestaande bomen toegevoegd omdat ik ze niet wilde maaien. Het huis is gevuld met kringloopvondsten, mijn eigen ontworpen geweven wandkleden en heel veel planten. We hebben vier slaapkamers, een strandkiezelbadkamer en aparte toiletten. De woonkamer, eetkamer, mijn studio en keuken met eiland bevinden zich allemaal in één open ruimte met een open haard en een kathedraalplafond.

Wat is het wildste / beste / meest opwindende dat er is gebeurd sinds je hiermee begon?

Het meest opwindende was het doen van huiswerk met een beperkt budget in huizen van andere mensen en natuurlijk in een echt tijdschrift en op een aantal enorme insta-accounts of blogs zoals @apartmenttherapy, @ fashions.tv, @myinterior en @roomporn. Het waardeert je werk echt. De eerste keer dat ik een cadeau kreeg in een decoshop toen ik mijn insta-account liet zien, was ook erg spannend. En natuurlijk mensen die mooie complimenten sturen, gratis producten sturen of om advies vragen, geeft me alle vibes die ik nodig heb om door te gaan.

Heb je ongelukken / gekke verhalen gehad tijdens het stylen?

Ik heb ooit een luifel op mijn hoofd laten vallen en ik stond op het bed te schreeuwen om hulp met mijn armen in de lucht, stukjes touw in mijn mond en een hamer tussen mijn knieën die bij de minste beweging op mijn voeten zou vallen … Ik altijd zing heel hard en heel vals tijdens het stylen van de kamer, ik sleep letterlijk stukken hout van het bos en het strand naar huis, of ik stop abrupt de auto om palmbladeren of pampagras op de weg te maaien. Onnodig te zeggen dat mijn kinderen me altijd uitlachen als ze me horen zingen of als ik thuiskom met mijn lekkers.

Wat is de toekomst voor jou?

Ik heb last van reislust: zou graag een busje kopen en door Europa reizen, zoveel plaatsen en mensen om te ontdekken … Ik zou graag aardewerk en timmerwerk en surfen en Italiaans leren en … te veel dingen om op te noemen!

What / Where is your dream home?

My dream home would be a super natural circular adobe/bamboo eco construction or a tiny house. 

What does the rest of your home look like? 

If I would describe my home’s style in 3 words, I would say it’s a Bohemian Jungle Fairyland. My house was built in the ’70s. I bought it in 2009 and completely renovated it from floor to roof, only keeping the old doors. The garage became the living room, the former kitchen and living room became bedrooms, and a new kitchen was added in an extension. I also added a swimming pool with a terrace built around the existing trees because I didn’t want to cut them. The house is filled with thrift finds, my own designed woven wall hangings, and tons of plants. We have four bedrooms, one beach pebble bathroom, and separate toilets. The living, dining, my studio, and kitchen with island are all in one open space with a fireplace and cathedral ceiling. Pictures are on instagram 

What’s the wildest/best/most exciting thing that happened since you started this

The most exciting thing was doing home staging on a budget in other people houses and of course being featured in a real magazine and on some huge insta accounts or blogs like @apartmenttherapy, @fashions.tv, @myinterior and @roomporn. It really valorizes your work. The first time I received a present in a decoshop when I showed my insta account was also very exciting. And of course people messaging lovely compliments, sending products for free or asking for advice is giving me all the vibes I need to continue.

Did you have any mishaps / crazy stories that happened whilst styling?

I once had a canopy falling on my head and me standing on the bed screaming for help with my arms in the air, pieces of rope in my mouth and a hammer between my knees that would fall on my feet with the slightest move… I always sing very loud and very off key whilst styling the room, I literally drag home pieces of wood from the forest and the beach, or I abruptly pull over the car to cut palm leaves or pampas grass on the road. Needless to say my kids always make fun of me when they hear me sing or when I come home with my goodies 

What’s next for you?

I suffer from wanderlust: would love to buy a Van and travel around Europe, so many places and people to discover … I would love to learn pottery and carpenting and surfing and Italian and ….haha too many things to list!
